How much does a WhatsApp AI agent cost in 2026?

It depends on how many messages you receive and what the agent has to do. The cost has four parts: what WhatsApp charges per message, AI usage, the platform that connects your number, and the setup. And since October 1, 2026, WhatsApp also charges for replies within an open conversation.

What's changing on WhatsApp in 2026

  • Paid replies from October 1, 2026. Meta charges for the replies a business sends within 24 hours of the customer's last message, which it calls "service messages." Until now they were free. They're paid per message, at the same price as each country's utility messages.
  • A free allowance. According to official WhatsApp providers such as 360dialog and respond.io, the first 1,000 service messages per number each month are free.
  • Meta's agent. Since August 1, 2026, on the WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta Business Agent messages cost $2 per million tokens. According to Meta, that's about 4 to 5 cents per message.
  • Only the business's own agents. Since January 15, 2026, WhatsApp doesn't allow general-purpose AI assistants on its business platform. An agent that serves your business's customers is allowed.

How much each reply costs by country

The price depends on the country of the customer who receives the message.

Customer's countryPrice per reply (USD)
Spain0.0200
Mexico0.0085
Colombia0.0008
Argentina0.0260
Chile0.0200
Peru0.0300
Rest of Latin America0.0113

Meta rates from October 1, 2026, according to 360dialog (September 2026). Check Meta's official table before preparing a budget.

For example, 3,000 replies a month to customers in Mexico from a single number would cost about $17 in messages: you pay for 2,000, because the first 1,000 are free. With customers in Spain, it would be about $40.

The four parts of the cost

  1. WhatsApp messages. What Meta charges for each reply and each template: promotions, reminders or codes.
  2. AI. Pay-as-you-go. With Meta's agent, it's about 4 to 5 cents per message. With your own model, it depends on the model you choose and how long the conversations are.
  3. The platform. The provider that connects your number to WhatsApp and gives your team a shared inbox. It usually charges a monthly fee.
  4. Setup. Deciding what the agent answers and what goes to a person, giving it your business information, connecting it to your calendar, catalog or CRM, and testing it before opening it to customers.

The fourth part is what decides whether the agent helps or annoys.

Meta's agent or your own?

  • Meta's agent. Quick to activate, and it also works on Messenger and Instagram. According to Meta, getting started is free and there will be paid subscription plans. It's useful for answering FAQs, recommending products or booking appointments with what Meta offers.
  • Your own agent. It connects to your systems, follows your tone and rules, and you choose the AI. It takes more work at first, but it pays off when the agent needs to qualify leads, sell or work with your business data.

Before you launch it

  • Define when it hands over to a person: complaints, important sales or any question the agent doesn't handle well.
  • Disclose that it's AI. In the EU, since August 2, 2026, people chatting with an AI must know it, unless it's obvious. We explain it in Do you have to label AI-generated ads?
  • Protect the data. Conversations include personal data and, in Europe, must be handled under the GDPR.
  • Measure the results: how many conversations it resolves on its own, how many it hands over, and how much time it saves you.
